Who are Master Grocers Australia?
MGA operates within the grocery and liquor retailer industry. In the absence of a truly national employer association,
MGA (formerly the MGAV) embarked upon a national expansion program of its services and support to cater for the needs of
retailers in all states in Australia.
The industry comprises of 1 major national industry wholesaler in Metcash with essentially 2,100 branded independent
supermarkets sourcing their dry, chilled and frozen groceries as well as packaged liquor from Metcash / Australian Liquor
Marketers warehouses around Australia*.
The 2 national independent supermarket brands are Foodworks (725 stores) and IGA (1,400 stores).
The IGA Brand comprises 3 sub Brands that coincide with the size and service offer of supermarkets eg. small, medium and
large supermarkets branded IGA Xpress, IGA and Supa IGA Supermarkets.
It is estimated the 2 national brands generate $11.46 billion in retail sales and employ 75,000 staff (1/3 full time, 1/3
part time & 1/3 casual).
The independent sector represents approximately 20% of the grocery sector.
MGA suite of services includes workplace relations, compliance training, industry representation and industry networking.

SPAR is predominately a Queensland only Brand comprising 250 independent supermarkets. The SPAR warehouse in Brisbane supplies
dry, chilled and frozen groceries.
