Australian Liquor Stores Association
MGA (LRA) is a board member of the Australian Liquor Stores Association. This organisation, in conjunction with liquor industry stakeholders, develops industry policy and self regulatory codes whist also addressing many vital issues that could affect, or do affect, packaged liquor retailers on a day to day basis. These may include, but are not limited to:
- Consultation with government - Impact on Alcohol Policy
- Initiators, launch and maintenance of "Don't Buy It For Them" and "ID 25" Campaigns
- Submissions to government concerning increase in excise on alcopops
- Development of Red Alert - Industry Code of Conduct
- NH & MRC - standard drinks change
- Alcohol warning labels
- Industry philosophy - position statement - high ABV RTD's
Most recent MGA submissions to Federal Government include:
- Award Modernisation / General Retail Industry Award - AIRC/ the Workplace Relations Minister Hon Ms Julia Gillard.
- AFPC Wage Rates Review - 20 March 2009
- Lobbying Minister for Small Business and members of parliament to strengthen the TPA to protect small business - ie. creeping acquisitions, predatory pricing, misuse of market power, unconscionable conduct
- Productivity Commission - national weights and measures, parental leave
- ACCC Inquiry into Grocery Pricing - creeping acquisitions, unconscionable conduct, predatory pricing.
- Senate Economics Committee - Unit Pricing, Creeping Acquisitions

MGA / LRA represent members on the Victorian Liquor Commission Advisory Committee (LCAC):
Points that are being addressed on behalf of independent packaged liquor retailers are:
- Training
- Licensing Criteria
- Access to Minors
- Promotion
- This year the LCAC are to review - outlet density, harm minimization, drink spiking, and interstate legislative jurisdiction.
- There has been discussion on related work of Victorian Alcohol Action Plan, Victorian Alcohol and Drug Prevention Council, and new ministerial taskforce of Premier Brumby, Ministers Neville and Robinson.
Recent MGA submissions to State Governments include:
- Full Review and critique of Workers Compensation Act Victoria - to Peter Hanks QC (Minister's Assistant).
- Victorian Retail Planning Policy Review Committee - Department of Community and Planning Development - Sustainability, Community and Environment.
- OHSAC - Occupational Health and Safety Advisory Committee - national focus.
- SRG - State Representative Group - OH&S.
- Tobacco Legislation Amendments - Remove tobacco from display - effective in Victoria - 1 January 2011, ACT - 1 January 2010, NSW - over 50 employees, 1 January 2010 / under 50 employees 1 July 2010.
Victorian Packaged Liquor Alliance
MGA (LRA) has formed a Packaged Liquor Retail Alliance in Victoria - (MGA (LRA), Coles, Woolworths)
The purpose of the alliance is to:
- Discuss and action common issues at a state and federal level.
- One voice, on common issues, at Victorian Licensing Commission level.
- Independent packaged liquor retailers are being well represented at this forum.
