The entire world is in a state of shock after the unprecedented bushfires that have devastated the homes and livelihoods of thousands of Australians. The effects of the last few weeks will be felt for a long time into the future and it is vital that those who have suffered as a result of this catastrophe are provided with the support, both financial and emotional, that they need to help them to restore their lives and their future. It is encouraging to see the extent of Government assistance available and MGA welcomed the opportunity to be in Canberra this week to help our retailers and their families to brave the recovery process that is so desperately needed. MGA wanted to ensure that our members needs are given immediate attention by both Federal and State Governments. We welcome, and are grateful for, the financial support already provided by Governments and all the contributions that have been made by so many members of the public and other organisations to assist in the recovery of thousands of devastated families and businesses. MGA is confident that, although the re-building procedure will take time, our retailers, their families and employees, will restore their homes and businesses to become even better than before.

Paying a salary to employees
If members want to pay a salary to an employee it must be based on the General Retail Industry Award if the employee is employed in a retail outlet. It is important to make sure that firstly all appropriate award rates and penalties are paid to the employee for the hours worked. Then an amount for additional responsibility can be added to the basic total amount payable under the award. This affords protection to the retailer against any underpayment of wages. MGA has a management contract available to Members which ensures that all the essential basic rates are covered, plus an extra amount is paid to elevate the salary to the appropriate level for the duties performed. The contract protects the business against any claim for underpayment of wages.
