ACT Container Deposit Scheme 

The ACT Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) will commence on 30 June 2018.

The Scheme encourages recycling within the Canberra community and aims to reduce waste to landfill via increased source separation of eligible containers at CDS collection points and material sorting efficiency increases at the Hume Material Recovery Facility.
 

Under the Scheme, consumers will be able to return eligible, empty beverage containers to designated collection points and receive a 10 cent refund for each container.

Most aluminium, glass, PET, HDPE, steel and liquid paperboard beverage containers between 150 millilitres and 3 litres (inclusive) will be eligible containers under the Scheme.
 

Container return points will feature across ACT. Return points include bulk counting depots, where containers can be returned for cash or EFT, and express return points, where containers can be returned for an EFT refund or a donation to select charities.

FAQ

What containers will be eligible?

Most glass, plastic, aluminium, steel and paper-based cartons between 150mL and 3L which are commonly found in the litter stream. Containers must be between 150mL and 3L in size; and Glass, PET, HDPE, aluminium, steel or liquid paperboard (cartons). Uncrushed containers are preferred, although crushed containers will be accepted. At the commencement of the Scheme, the ACT CDS collection points will accept crushed containers, and any container which carries the refund marking of SA and NT schemes.

What containers are not eligible?

Containers not commonly found in litter, including all plain milk, flavoured milks 1L and above, pure juice drinks, health tonics, wine and spirit bottles, cordials.

Can containers be returned in a different State or Territory, if they were purchased in the ACT?

Once the ACT CDS has commenced, eligible containers can be returned in any State or Territory in Australia where a Container Deposit Scheme is in place.
